Most organizations today recognize the importance of data management. They view data as an enterprise asset and manage it with governance, architectural standards, and controls. In contrast, most organizations are passive and casual about metadata management. While they manage data as an asset, they often view metadata as merely a by-product of data management processes.
Data teams typically turn to data catalogs to address their metadata needs. However, data catalogs are only part of the solution. As the complexity of data management continues to increase, metadata management has become an essential discipline.
In this session, we will discuss the difference between data catalogs and data cataloging. We will also present a high-level metadata management architecture that can be used as a framework to address metadata challenges such as silos, disparities, self-service difficulties, and poor data catalog adoption.
